This introductory class provides a comprehensive overview of photography and cameras, starting with a brief history from early camera obscuras to modern designs. You’ll learn why cameras look and function the way they do, giving you a deeper appreciation of their evolution over time.
The class explores the four main types of film cameras—SLRs, view cameras, rangefinders, and simple cameras—through hands-on demonstrations of each. You’ll also have the chance to handle medium and large-format cameras, gaining insight into their unique capabilities.
Key camera controls such as iso, shutter speed, aperture, and film stops will be explained, including their importance in achieving proper exposure. You’ll also learn about lens types, focal lengths, and depth of field, with practical examples to help you choose the right lens for different subjects.
The course covers film speed, various film sizes and formats, and the basic principles of film development. Additionally, you’ll receive instruction on using light meter apps on your phone to ensure accurate metering and exposures when shooting with your film camera.
Finally, personalized guidance with your own camera will ensure you leave the class feeling confident and ready to take full control of your equipment. Whether you’re a complete beginner or looking to solidify your understanding, this class will set you up for success in film photography.
