EVERYBODY SKATE

Contact Photo is pleased to present EVERYBODY SKATE, a solo exhibition by Brooklyn-based photographer, Lanna Apisukh. EVERYBODY SKATE highlights the female and non-binary skateboarding community in New York City through Apisukh’s photographic works made from 2019 – 2023.

For over five years, Apisukh has been bringing underrepresented skateboarders into focus through environmental portraiture and spontaneous moments documented on the streets and at public skateparks throughout the city’s boroughs.

The works on display range from vibrant color photographs to grainy black and white film images complementing the creative style and independent spirit that New York City skaters exhibit while exploring themes of gender and identity in the public space.

“As a female skater growing up in the 90s, I often found myself being the only girl at the skatepark. It was intimidating to be a young woman and a minority in an aggressive male-dominated space, especially as a beginner. Fortunately, the landscape is evolving and attitudes are changing. Women's skateboarding is now recognized as an Olympic sport and there are a growing number of organizations that host skate clinics and events to create an inclusive and safe space for women, trans and non-binary people to learn new skills, get support and build confidence. It's an exciting time in skateboarding and my aim is to showcase the diversity and trailblazing individuals that make up this positive new space.”

– Lanna Apisukh

Imbued with stories of courage, camaraderie and athleticism, EVERYBODY SKATE gives us an exciting peek into the city’s growing community of “New Skaters” and what skateboarding culture looks like today and for the future.
