This hands-on weekend workshop led by photographers Poupay, Lucia and Lanna will cover the basics of flash photography and studio lighting. In just two days, students will learn essential lighting techniques and explore creative approaches using portable speedlights and studio strobes.
Students will also have the opportunity to test drive Fujifilm’s latest flagship X Series camera, the X-T5 as well as a few of their speedlights. Click here to read more about the X-T5.
We’ll cover:
Camera and flash settings for indoor and outdoor use
How to use off-camera flash (OCF) using a wireless trigger
Professional lighting gear used both in studio and on-location
Lighting modifiers and how they are used to control and shape light
How to create bold portraits and still life using one light
How to freeze motion with flash and other creative techniques
Classes will take place in the studio and on the street. We will have a variety of lighting solutions from compact speedlights to studio strobes on hand to demonstrate.
The introductory workshop is perfect for anyone who is comfortable shooting with ambient or natural light but looking to expand on their photography skills using artificial light.

Lucia Buricelli is an Italian photographer born and raised in Venice, currently based in New York. Buricelli started taking pictures as a teenager, in the streets of Venice. She went on to graduate from the Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti in Milan, in Graphic Design and Art Direction in 2017 and then went on to graduate from the Documentary Practice and Visual Journalism Program at ICP, International Center of photography. In her work, Buricelli is interested in exploring everyday life in all its forms: from interactions between people, animals that live in urban environments, to self-portraits. Buricelli is interested in documenting different aspects of urban daily life, she believes that interesting things can be found anywhere and at anytime. Colours and the use of the frontal flash play an important role in Buricelli’s work.

Lanna Apisukh is a portrait and documentary photographer based in New York City. Her work explores people and their relationship to place, culture, and identity through bold, colorful stories that she strives to create in her images.
With a background in skateboarding and gymnastics, Lanna draws inspiration from the dynamic individuals and communities she photographs. She is a regular contributor to The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and New York Magazine, covering topics such as food, fashion, business, lifestyle, and the arts.

"Jutharat Pinyodoonyachet, otherwise known by her moniker Poupay, is a Thai photographer based in New York City. With a keen passion for street photography, Poupay's work has developed into a distinctive portfolio featuring subjects that range from chance encounters to bizarre slices of city life.
Her approach is entirely direct while maintaining a fly-on-the-wall mindset. Poupay is a graduate of the International Center of Photography's Creative Practices One-Year Certificate Program. She is currently working as a freelance photographer in New York City and is a regular contributor to multiple New York-based publications, including The New York Times, New York Magazine, The New Yorker, and The Wall Street Journal.

Requirements: It’s recommended that students have some knowledge of shooting in manual mode with their camera. Students should bring a digital camera to class with memory cards and a battery. There will be some flashes available in class, but it’s encouraged to bring your own flash and wireless transmitter.
