FILM CAMERA 101: An Introductory Workshop

Join us for a comprehensive one-day workshop designed to introduce participants to the fundamentals of photography. Whether you're a beginner looking to master manual camera settings or an enthusiast eager to explore different genres of photography, this workshop is tailored to meet your needs. Through hands-on activities, interactive discussions, and practical demonstrations, you'll gain the knowledge and skills to kickstart your photographic journey. This class is open to both analog and digital photographers.

Prerequisites: Students will need a film camera with manual controls, preferably with a 50mm lens. Along with your camera students should also bring two photographs they admire.

The class will be held Sunday, April 28th, from 10am to 6pm.

Tuition: $225 with a maximum of 12 students.

Class Schedule:

  • 10:00 AM - 10:30 AM: Meet and Greet

    10:30 AM - 11:00 AM: Introduction to Photography

    • Overview of the workshop objectives

    • Brief history of photography

    • Understanding the importance of light in photography

    11:30 AM - 12:00 PM: Getting to Know Your Camera

    • Introduction to different types of cameras (SLR, Medium Format, etc.)

    • Understanding camera settings: aperture, shutter speed, ISO

    • Hands-on practice: navigating camera menus and settings

    12:30 PM - 1:00 PM: Mastering Manual Mode

    • Explanation of exposure triangle: aperture, shutter speed, ISO

    • Practical exercises: adjusting settings to achieve proper exposure

    • Tips for using manual mode effectively

    1:00 PM - 2:00 PM: Lunch Break (Participants are encouraged to bring their own lunch or explore nearby eateries)

    2:00 PM - 3:00 PM: Exploring Different Types of Photography

    • Overview of various photography genres: landscape, portraiture, still life, street photography, etc.

    • Discussion on the characteristics and techniques associated with each genre

    • Inspirational examples from renowned photographers

    3:00 PM - 3:30 PM: Composition Techniques

    • Understanding the rule of thirds

    • Exploring leading lines, framing, symmetry, and other composition techniques

    • Practical exercises: applying composition principles in photo shoots

    3:30 PM - 4:30 PM: Hands-On Photo Shoot

    • Guided photo walk around the neighborhood to practice newly acquired skills

    • Instructor feedback and assistance during the photo shoot

    4:30 PM - 5:30 PM: Review and Q&A

    • Group review of participants' photos

    • Addressing common challenges and questions

    • Recap of key takeaways and resources for further learning

    6:00 PM: Workshop Conclusion

By the end of this course, students will gain practical experience in photography, understanding of camera operation, and compositional skills, enabling them to continue exploring photography independently.

Meet the instructor:

Giulia Ricciotti (@GiuliaRicciotti) is a multidisciplinary artist originating from Italy with a focus on photography. With a background enriched by scholarships, she has pursued her passion across Colombia, Argentina, and her native Italy. Her work has been featured in various esteemed publications including Ballad Of, Curated by Girls, Girls on Film, Chicle Mag, Pompayira Mag, Splendor Mag, Whitelies Mag, and D Repubblica. Notably, her photography has also been showcased in Photo Vogue.

Giulia has enjoyed an 11-year collaboration with Regia Magazine, a fashion publication based in Buenos Aires and Miami. She has participated in exhibitions worldwide, including a notable display at the Soho Photo Gallery in New York.

Currently, Giulia is preparing for an upcoming exhibition at the Festival Europeo della Fotografia, Circuito Off, featuring photographs captured during her recent art residency in Italy. Her work encompasses a range of subjects including portraits, street photography, and architectural studies, all while maintaining a consistent style.

Balancing traditional and digital techniques, Giulia employs both 35mm and 120mm formats in her photography. She is currently engaged in the creation of a new book and a project focusing on abandoned spaces.

Tuition: $225 with a Maximum of 12 students.
Minimum enrollment required to conduct workshop by April 21th.

    Class Rescheduling: In the event of a necessary rescheduling, participants will be notified promptly, and information about the new dates will be provided. Participants will have the option to attend the rescheduled class or receive a refund or credit towards a future class.

    Participant Withdrawal: If a participant needs to withdraw from the workshop for personal reasons, the following refund policy applies:

    More than 30 days before the workshop begins: 100% refund.

    Between 29 and 8 days before the workshop begins: 50% refund.

    Within 7 days of the workshop: NO refund.
